It was early. The sun was only just beginning to peer over the horizon; it's vibrant tendrils of pink and orange creeping across the lands. There was no wind to tousle the matured grasses, no stirring of small creatures to blur the vague imprint of shadows. Out in the midst of the wide, green expanse, a large gray mass lay. The mare was lightly dozing, enjoying the cool before the onset of the first heat of summer, her chest lightly rising and falling with her breath. It was comfortable, in the absence of flies and the blaring sun. Her multishaded mane covered her dark eyes, shading them from the bright star as it rose ever higher.
But as it reached higher, it got hotter. Before long, Nenet was up and walking about, grabbing a small mouthful of grass before heading for what little shade there was. The dark caves at the far side of the lands promised a cool retreat, but she dared not venture towards them alone. Hell, going anywhere alone for her was an uncomfortable move. Nene's head lay low as she trudged about, her heart heavy and her spirits having pitted. It had felt like years since she had stayed anywhere with others for too long. She wandered around looking for a herd that could deal well with her eccentricities, but it proved a difficult task. Eying the black stone caves once more, this time with more consideration.
